The 'Cats scored just nine runs over three games as Purdue extended its series win streak over Northwestern to seven.

Northwestern's baseball team entered their weekend series against Purdue with momentum, fresh off a three-game winning streak that included a 15-run offensive explosion against UIC. However, that hot streak came to a sudden and decisive halt as the Wildcats' bats went cold against the visiting Boilermakers.

Over three games and 28 innings, Northwestern could only muster nine total runs, leading to a sweep by a surging Purdue squad. The Boilermakers (25-10, 12-6 Big Ten) extended their recent dominance over the 'Cats, securing their ninth win in the last ten meetings with final scores of 11-3, 3-2, and 8-3.

The series opener on Friday set the tone. Despite a strong five-inning, six-strikeout performance from freshman left-hander Jake Rifenburg and RBIs from Noah Ruiz and Nick Barron that gave NU a 3-1 lead, the game unraveled. Purdue rallied for three runs in the fourth and then exploded for seven runs in the final inning against the Wildcat bullpen, turning a close contest into a lopsided defeat.

Saturday's matchup delivered the toughest blow in a heartbreaking extra-inning loss. Starter Matt Kouser was excellent, allowing just one run over six innings. Ryan Kucherak provided a clutch moment, crushing his seventh home run of the year to give Northwestern a 2-1 lead in the sixth. The drama peaked in the ninth inning, where a costly throwing error with two outs allowed Purdue to tie the game. Quincy Malbrough's RBI single in the 10th then put the Boilermakers ahead for good. Northwestern had a golden chance to answer, loading the bases with only one out in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't capitalize, sealing a gut-wrenching 3-2 loss.

With the sweep, Northwestern's record falls to 13-18-1 overall and 5-10 in conference play. The weekend highlighted the fine margins in college baseball, where a few key hits or defensive plays can swing a series. The Wildcats will look to reignite their offense and bounce back as they continue their Big Ten schedule.
