Kellen Gaede delivered a performance worthy of a highlight reel Monday night, but a late-game collapse overshadowed his heroics as Claremore fell 9-7 to Collinsville in a pivotal District 5A-3 showdown.
The junior was a force on both sides of the ball, striking out 10 batters over 4.2 innings and sparking the Zebras' offense with a clutch, go-ahead double. His two-RBI hit capped a five-run fourth inning that briefly swung momentum in Claremore's favor, erasing an early 3-0 deficit.
However, baseball is a game of momentum, and it shifted violently in the sixth. What had been a tight contest unraveled for Claremore, as defensive miscues opened the door for Collinsville. The Cardinals capitalized fully, erupting for six runs to reclaim a lead they would not relinquish.
"We did not play very good baseball tonight," said Claremore coach Jonathan Gelnar, pointing to seven errors as the team's undoing. "When things started to snowball, we had to do a better job of having a better response."
The loss serves as a tough lesson in closing out games, a reminder that even a stellar individual effort can be undone by collective mistakes. For Collinsville, the victory reinforces their strong district standing, while Claremore is left to regroup quickly, with the schedule offering little respite. The Zebras will need to tighten their defense and find a way to bottle the fight they showed in their comeback, carrying it through all seven innings.
