The Orioles finally snapped their five-game losing streak on Tuesday night, taking down the Marlins 9-7 in Miami. After a rough weekend that left fans frustrated, Baltimore's offense came alive in a big way—and just in time to mask some shaky pitching on the mound.
From the very first inning, the bats were ready to erase the memory of that nightmare series in New York. Gunnar Henderson wasted no time, lacing the second pitch from Sandy Alcantara into right field for a single. A fielder's choice from Taylor Ward erased Henderson but kept the pressure on. Then came a pivotal moment: Dylan Beavers worked a gutsy 12-pitch at-bat to draw a walk, setting the stage for Pete Alonso. The slugger crushed a double into the left-field corner, where a misplay by former Oriole Kyle Stowers allowed Alonso to race all the way to third—and both runners scored. Samuel Basallo followed with a 111-mph rocket of his own, another double that made it 3-0 Baltimore.
But the Orioles would need every one of those runs, because starter Chris Bassitt wasn't at his sharpest. The first two Marlins batters singled, putting runners on the corners with no outs. A wild pitch brought in Miami's first run, but Bassitt settled just enough to escape the inning with a strikeout, a popout, and a groundout to limit the damage.
The second inning was even tougher for Bassitt. He hit Connor Norby to lead off, but Basallo erased him by gunning down the steal attempt at second base. After another out, Bassitt hit Owen Caissie, walked Graham Pauley, and walked Xavier Edwards to load the bases. Liam Hicks made him pay with a single that scored two runs, tying the game at 3-3.
Credit the Baltimore lineup for answering right back in the top of the third. Ward led off with a walk and moved to third on another Alonso double. Basallo delivered again, this time with a two-run flare into shallow right field that gave the Orioles a 5-3 lead. It was exactly the kind of response a team needs when its starter is struggling—and a reminder that good offense can cover up a lot of flaws on the mound.
