Barnsley Football Club has officially announced the return of Daniel Stendel as head coach for the upcoming 2025/26 season, a move that brings a familiar face back to Oakwell.

The Tykes began the current campaign under Conor Hourihane, who initially served as interim coach for the second half of the previous season. Hourihane's tenure started brightly, earning him the League One Manager of the Month award for November. However, results soon tapered off, and Barnsley ultimately finished in 15th place. In April, the club mutually agreed to part ways with the former Republic of Ireland midfielder, despite him having a year remaining on his contract.

Now, the club has turned to a proven leader to steer the ship. Daniel Stendel returns to the role he held during the 2018/19 season, when he guided Barnsley to promotion from League One. His previous stint was cut short early in the following campaign, but his connection to the club remains strong. Most recently, Stendel has been in charge of Hannover 96's B team in Germany.

"I am absolutely delighted to be back at Barnsley Football Club," Stendel said. "This is a place that means a great deal to me, and I'm really looking forward to reconnecting with old friends while also getting to know new faces around the Club and in the town. I can't wait to get back to work and start this next chapter together."

For fans, Stendel's return evokes memories of an exciting, high-pressing style that brought success just a few years ago. As the Tykes look to rebuild and push for promotion again, this appointment signals a clear ambition to recapture that winning spirit. Whether you're cheering from the stands or repping the red and white at home, it's a moment to get behind the badge once more.
