The Florida Panthers may have missed the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, but their star power is heading to the international stage. Captain Sasha Barkov and Olympic gold medalist Matthew Tkachuk are among the Panthers set to compete at the IIHF World Championship in Switzerland later this month—a thrilling opportunity for fans to see their favorite players in action once again.
For Barkov, this tournament marks his first competitive ice time of the year. The Finnish center underwent reconstructive surgery on his right knee after suffering an injury on the very first day of training camp in September. Despite the setback, he remained dedicated to his recovery, practicing with the Panthers toward the end of the season and continuing his workouts at the team’s IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale to prepare for the Worlds.
Had he not been sidelined, Barkov would have captained Finland at the Olympic Games—he was one of the first players selected for the Olympic roster last summer. Now, he’s eager to don his national colors again. “I am very excited about that,” Barkov said last month. “I know, here, everyone wanted to make the playoffs… but thankfully I got an invitation from the Finnish team to join them at Worlds. Last time I played there was 10 years ago. It’s a big honor to represent Finland, and it was one of those childhood dreams to win World Championships. That’s a big goal for me. I have been working really hard to get in shape. Any chance I get to represent Finland is a big honor.”
Panthers General Manager Bill Zito, who will serve as an advisor for Team USA under assistant GM Brett Peterson, confirmed that Barkov is 100 percent healthy and ready to go. Peterson, meanwhile, will take the reins as GM of Team USA at the Worlds for the second time (having first done so in 2024), after serving as an assistant GM on last year’s gold-medal-winning squad. It’s a testament to the Panthers’ deep ties to international hockey.
Zito fully supports his players’ participation. “In my mind, if a hockey player wants to play hockey, that’s a good thing,” he said. “Provided they have medical clearance, I would encourage anyone who wants to go, to go. It’s a wonderful experience, a great tournament. It’s a chance for guys to actually have a playoff. It’s a great opportunity… For [Barkov], I think it’s really special because he missed so much hockey. He wants to play hockey, so it’s great.”
For Panthers fans, this is a chance to see their heroes in a high-stakes international setting—and perhaps a preview of the firepower that will return to Sunrise next season. Whether you’re cheering for Barkov’s Finland or Tkachuk’s USA, the World Championship promises to be an exciting showcase of elite talent.
