FC Barcelona is taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth transition during the later phases of the Spotify Camp Nou renovation, recently submitting a formal request to the Barcelona City Council for permission to continue using the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for the first half of the 2027/28 season.

This move comes as the club prepares for one of the most critical stages of the stadium redevelopment: the installation of the new roof at Camp Nou. According to technical studies currently under review, the roof work is expected to begin in the summer of 2027 and could take between four to five months to complete. That timeline would directly impact the start of the 2027/28 campaign, making it challenging for Barcelona to host matches at their iconic home ground during the opening months of the season.

Rather than waiting for logistical complications to arise, the club is getting ahead of the curve by exploring alternative venues. The request to use Montjuïc is being framed as a precautionary measure rather than a confirmed plan, but it reflects Barcelona's commitment to maintaining a seamless matchday experience for fans and players alike.

While the Montjuïc option is gaining strong internal support due to its much larger capacity and financial advantages, the club is also considering other possibilities. One alternative involves expanding the Estadi Johan Cruyff, which currently holds around 6,000 spectators, to approximately 10,000 seats. However, that project would require an investment of nearly €14 million and would generate significantly lower revenue compared to the Olympic stadium.

Given the financial and logistical realities, the Montjuïc solution appears to be the frontrunner. Barcelona understands that unexpected delays can still arise during such a massive renovation project, so having a contingency plan in place is not just smart—it's essential. For now, fans can rest assured that the club is working diligently to keep the team playing at the highest level, no matter where the pitch may be. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
