Barcelona are laser-focused on Sunday's blockbuster La Liga showdown against Real Madrid, where even a draw would be enough to officially crown them champions. But while the Clasico takes center stage, the club is taking a cautious approach with one key defender's return.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana coaching staff have decided there's no need to rush Andreas Christensen back for the El Clasico, despite the Danish center-back making excellent progress in his recovery. Instead, the 30-year-old is now expected to receive his medical clearance in time for Barcelona's next league fixture against Alaves on May 13 at Mendizorroza.
Christensen has been sidelined since December 2025 after suffering a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a training session. The former Chelsea star opted for conservative treatment to avoid surgery, which came with an expected recovery timeline of several months. In recent weeks, he's been training with positive sensations and no setbacks, but Barcelona aren't taking any chances given his history of fitness issues.
This measured approach makes even more sense if Barcelona can seal the title this weekend. With less pressure and intensity in the remaining fixtures, Christensen could ease back into action and get valuable minutes on the pitch. The Danish international will be hoping to use those late-season appearances to build momentum and strengthen his case for a contract renewal at the Camp Nou.
