Barcelona are facing a steep uphill battle in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, with the latest reports revealing just how costly—and complicated—a deal would be this summer.
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, writing for MARCA, any transfer for the Argentine striker would fall between €100 million and €130 million. That price tag places Alvarez among the most expensive potential moves on the market, and it's already giving Barcelona serious pause.
But the financial hurdle is only part of the story. Atletico Madrid have made it abundantly clear that Alvarez is not for sale. Diego Simeone views the 24-year-old as a cornerstone of his project, and the club is already working on extending his current contract. In short, they consider him untouchable.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle for Barcelona, however, is the player himself. Alvarez is reportedly very happy in Madrid, fully settled at Atletico, and has shown no desire to leave. According to the latest information, if he ever did want a move, he would need to personally inform Atletico's hierarchy—something that hasn't happened yet. No club has even made a formal approach.
That hasn't stopped interest from growing across Europe. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are both monitoring the situation closely, but Atletico's valuation is making any potential deal look extremely difficult—especially for the Catalan club.
For Barcelona, Alvarez is a top priority target. But their well-documented financial struggles make a nine-figure transfer nearly impossible. Even before this latest valuation, there was an understanding that negotiating with Atletico would be tough. Now, that reality is hitting even harder.
As if that weren't enough, Barcelona are also dealing with another major challenge behind the scenes. While the club dreams big, the numbers—and the player's own contentment—are reminding them that some transfers simply may be out of reach.
