Thierry Henry has delivered a blunt assessment of his former club, stating Barcelona's Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid exposes a deep-rooted defensive crisis. The Arsenal and Barcelona legend emphasized that the issue goes far beyond a single bad night, calling it a "structural problem" that demands an urgent fix.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Henry pointed to the red cards shown to Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia across the two-legged tie as symptomatic of a larger issue. He argued that Barcelona's high defensive line, without the requisite elite personnel to execute it, is a recipe for disaster in Europe's biggest games.
"This Barça desperately needs top-level defenders," Henry stated. "We can talk about the referee all night, but we also have to do self-criticism... If nothing changes, in the next ten years we will continue to see the same thing."
Henry, known for his attacking brilliance, highlighted a critical flaw: "I’ve been saying it for two years: this Barça offers opportunities to the opponent even when they dominate." He stressed that without "first-class stability" at the back, the club cannot hope to compete at the highest level, leaving them exposed to recurring nightmares in knockout football.
The summer transfer window now looms large for Barcelona. The club has already been linked with a move for a world-class center-back, with Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni reportedly a top target, as they seek to rebuild a foundation worthy of their illustrious history.
