While Barcelona's focus remains on securing the La Liga title—holding a commanding nine-point lead over rivals Real Madrid—the club's sporting department is already laying the groundwork for next season. Under new manager Hansi Flick, plans are being drawn up to strengthen a squad eager to compete on all fronts, especially after another disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League.

According to reports, one of the key positions targeted for reinforcement is full-back, and the preferred candidate is already wearing Blaugrana colors: Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese defender, currently on his second loan spell at the club, is seen as the ideal permanent solution this summer.

Cancelo arrived initially as cover following Andreas Christensen's injury and has since made the left-back spot his own, especially with Alejandro Balde sidelined. His versatility—comfortable on either flank—has been a major asset, and he has quickly become a trusted figure for Flick in a relatively young squad.

This season, Cancelo has made 16 appearances, contributing one goal and three assists, showcasing the attacking flair and defensive solidity that Barcelona value. His desire to stay is clear: he has no intention of returning to parent club Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia and is even prepared to take a significant pay cut to make a permanent move happen.

Represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who maintains a strong relationship with Barça president Joan Laporta, Cancelo is optimistic a deal can be reached despite no purchase option being included in the loan. All signs point to a player and a club aligned in ambition—ready to build a stronger, more experienced defense for the challenges ahead.
