Barcelona are edging closer to securing the future of Danish defender Andreas Christensen, with reports suggesting a contract agreement is imminent. The 30-year-old centre-back, who is set to become a free agent this summer, returned to training on Wednesday after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but his season has been largely defined by injury struggles.

Despite his limited game time, Christensen has shown no rush to explore other options. While he reportedly turned down an initial offer due to low wages, the defender is believed to be keen on staying at the Camp Nou. According to recent reports, a two-year deal is now within reach, with Christensen prioritizing Barcelona’s proposal over potentially more lucrative offers elsewhere. His family has settled in the Catalan capital, and he is reluctant to uproot his life.

This season has been a challenging one for Christensen, who has managed just 17 appearances across all competitions—only four of which were starts. His total playing time amounts to a mere 515 minutes, with a single goal to his name. Manager Hansi Flick has consistently praised the defender’s professionalism, but the German coach has yet to see that translate into consistent on-pitch contributions. Three of Christensen’s four seasons at Barcelona have been heavily disrupted by fitness issues.

Interestingly, Barcelona are reportedly covering their bases with this renewal. If the club manages to secure a marquee signing for their backline—such as Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni—they could look to move Christensen on, though his transfer value would likely be low. The club’s ability to make a major investment will depend on their salary cap situation, but for now, Christensen’s future appears to be in Barcelona—at least for the next two seasons.
