Atletico Madrid secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Barcelona in a tense Champions League quarter-final first leg, but the final scoreline was overshadowed by a major VAR controversy that left the football world debating.

The flashpoint occurred when Barcelona's Marc Pubill appeared to handle the ball inside his own penalty area following a pass from goalkeeper Juan Musso. However, referee Istvan Kovacs and the VAR team ruled the ball was not in play, denying Barcelona a potential penalty and a chance to equalize at 1-1.

Barcelona's players were left incensed. Defender Gerard Martin argued the ball was clearly live, stating, "The goalkeeper plants the ball and plays it. The ball is in play. Obviously, the player stops it with his hand... from the VAR that action has to be seen." Forward Marcus Rashford echoed the sentiment, calling it a clear penalty and pointing to precedent, saying such incidents "have always been given."

In stark contrast, Atletico's goalkeeper Juan Musso dismissed the uproar, defending the referee's decision and urging focus on the match itself. "Let's stop f****** with a play where nothing happens," he said. "Pubill's move does not change anything... The ball is not in play, the referee has to say so. The referee is in charge."

The contentious call adds another dramatic chapter to the fierce rivalry between these Spanish giants and sets the stage for a fiery second leg at the Camp Nou, where Barcelona will need a historic comeback fueled by both skill and a sense of injustice.
