Vanderbilt baseball fans received a significant update on pitcher Austin Nye's road to recovery. The right-hander, who underwent surgery to end his 2026 season, is now targeting a return for the 2027 campaign after a procedure with a promising recovery timeline.

Head coach Tim Corbin provided the details following the Commodores' 10-5 victory over Oklahoma on April 9. Nye did not undergo the traditional Tommy John ligament reconstruction. Instead, he had an internal brace surgery performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, a common choice for elite baseball players. This modern technique often allows for a faster rehabilitation process, a silver lining for the Vanderbilt program.

"It was a different surgery," Corbin explained. "It wasn't reconstruction. He had a brace put in his elbow so he will be back next year, sooner than that. Went well. Meister did it. Meister was very positive about the situation." Nye was spotted before the game at Hawkins Field with his right arm in a brace and sling, a temporary sight for a pitcher with a clearer path back to the mound.
