The Augustana Vikings softball team closed out their 2026 season with a hard-fought battle at the NCAA regional tournament in Joplin, Missouri, leaving everything on the field at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex. After a thrilling 4-0 victory over No. 20 St. Cloud State, the Vikings ultimately fell 11-5 to No. 9 Southern Arkansas, ending a season defined by resilience and standout performances.
In the opening game, the Vikings showed their championship mettle. Pitcher Teya Speltz delivered a dominant performance, striking out nine batters while allowing just three hits. At the plate, she contributed two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Andrea Cain was a force with three hits, while Kierra Lubovich drove in two runs. Ella Cooper and Desi Cuevas also added hits and scored, setting the tone early. The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a double from Cain, a run-scoring double by Speltz, and a two-run single from Lubovich. They extended their lead in the fourth when Cooper doubled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Cain.
Game two saw the Vikings take an early lead, but the Muleriders proved too strong. Augustana's top six hitters all recorded hits, with Lubovich and Sidney Smart each collecting two. Smart drove in three runs, and Lubovich scored twice. Helene Krage started in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) over three innings, while Speltz threw three innings of relief, striking out four. The Vikings struck first when Lubovich led off the second inning with a solo home run. After Southern Arkansas tied it, Augustana regained control in the third. Cain doubled, Cuevas walked, and Speltz singled to load the bases. Smart then cleared them with a double to left-center, making it 4-1. An error later brought home another run for a 5-1 lead. However, the Muleriders answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, and the game slipped away from there.
For Vikings fans, this season was a testament to the team's grit and talent, with Speltz's pitching and Cain's clutch hitting standing out as highlights. As the offseason begins, the foundation is set for a strong return in 2027.
