There's a new energy on the Plains, and it's arriving with a distinctly familiar look. New Auburn head coach Alex Golesh isn't starting from scratch; he's building on a foundation of trust, bringing a significant contingent of his former South Florida Bulls with him to spearhead a bullish rebuild in the SEC.
The centerpiece of this migration is dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown, a dynamic playmaker who followed Golesh to Auburn. Brown isn't coming alone—he's essentially brought the core of USF's high-octane offense with him. In total, Golesh signed 13 former Bulls, including key weapons like receivers Chas Nimrod and Keshaun Singleton, center Cole Best, and tight end Jonathan Echols. This instant chemistry and understanding of the system could give the Tigers a crucial head start in the nation's toughest conference.
"Coach Golesh showed me his plan from Day 1 when he got to USF, and now he came here and wanted to build something again," Brown said. "I have full trust and faith in him. What we have building here, I’m excited for the whole country to see."
All eyes will be on Brown during Auburn's spring game, and for good reason. The senior is coming off a spectacular 2023 campaign where he led all FBS quarterbacks with 42 total touchdowns, averaging over 347 yards of offense per game. His stat line—3,158 passing yards, 28 passing TDs, 1,008 rushing yards, and 14 rushing scores—earned him a place in an elite club. He became just the 12th player in NCAA history to achieve a 3,000/1,000 season, joining legends like Vince Young, Lamar Jackson, and Kyler Murray.
"He’s tough as nails," said offensive coordinator Joel Gordon, another USF transplant. "He’s full of grit. He’s a great competitor."
Brown has proven he can perform on big stages, leading USF to upset wins over Boise State and Florida last season and pushing Alabama to the brink in a tight 17-3 loss. Having accounted for 92 touchdowns over three years, he represents a beacon of hope for an Auburn passing attack that has struggled, managing a league-low 11 touchdown passes last season. With Brown at the helm and his trusted teammates around him, the Tigers' rebuild under Alex Golesh looks poised for a fast and exciting start.
