As Atletico Madrid prepare for a pivotal Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal, manager Diego Simeone has emphasized that emotional control will be key—but ultimately, the outcome rests in the hands of his players.
Speaking to the press on Monday evening, just before Atletico's training session at the Emirates Stadium, the Argentine tactician struck a calm yet focused tone. "No matter how much we analyse it, football is all about the players," Simeone said. "We need to manage our emotions effectively so that the game unfolds at its best. The game changes as soon as it starts; experience and time bring more composure—not necessarily ease, but the peace of mind needed to face a match like tomorrow's."
Reflecting on his team's impressive second-half performance in the first leg, Simeone couldn't help but smile. "I'm going to try to get them to repeat that second half. If it's that easy, it would be great."
The Atletico boss, known for his fiery sideline presence, appeared relaxed and refused to fuel any pre-match drama. "You're looking for a headline or a phrase that stands out from the ordinary, but the coaches and players just want the game to start. Because it's a football match, and whoever plays better will win. We'll try to maximise our strengths, and the Arsenal manager will try to maximise theirs."
When asked about a last-minute hotel change—a shift from their accommodation during a 4-0 group-stage loss to Arsenal in October—Simeone offered a lighthearted response. "We're better off now than we were in October. And the hotel was cheaper. That's why we changed," he said with a laugh.
On the injury front, three key players remain doubts: Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth, and Giuliano Simeone. "They moved around a bit yesterday, they're better. We hope they can train well and we'll decide how to start tomorrow morning," Simeone confirmed. He added that Alvarez, who knows the English league well, showed promise in last week's outing and could be a crucial asset if fit.
With emotions running high and a place in the final on the line, all eyes will be on the Metropolitano as Atletico look to channel their passion into performance.
