Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak didn't hold back after his team's Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal, delivering a candid assessment that will resonate with fans and players alike. The Slovenian shot-stopper, known for his composure under pressure, admitted his side fell short when it mattered most.
"I feel disappointed, like all the supporters. We didn't do enough to be in the final," Oblak said, his frustration evident. "It's a difficult moment to accept, but we had the opportunity to win and we didn't. All there is to do is congratulate Arsenal."
Oblak's critique cut deeper when he addressed Atletico's approach in both legs of the semi-final. The Spanish side trailed at halftime in each match, and despite improved second-half performances, they couldn't find the breakthrough in London.
"In both games, the first half was not good enough. We showed Arsenal too much respect—we played afraid," Oblak explained. "In the second halves, we did better, but it looks like we always wait for something to happen, to concede a goal, to wake up. Then it was too late. Many times this season, the game has gone like that and we've won, but not today. And this was the most important game of the season."
Despite the harsh words, Oblak softened when reflecting on the team's overall growth. With significant squad turnover in recent seasons—around 15 new players—the goalkeeper acknowledged the progress made by a young, developing side.
"The last two seasons, we changed a lot of players, many young ones without experience. They did great in the cup and now in the Champions League as well," Oblak said. "In the league, we weren't good enough for these matches, but I am proud of them. They are growing, and that's something to build on."
For Atletico Madrid, this elimination stings, but with a core of young talent and a veteran leader like Oblak in goal, the foundations are there for a strong return to Europe's biggest stage.
