The Atlanta Falcons may not have made the biggest splash this offseason, but they might have pulled off one of the smartest moves in the entire NFL. While critics point to a draft class without a first-round pick and a free-agent haul that's less than flashy, there's one signing that could change everything—and it's flying under the radar.

In a league where a franchise quarterback can cost $50 million a year, the Falcons landed former Miami Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa for just $1.2 million on a one-year deal. That's not just a bargain; according to Bleacher Report's Alex Kay, it's the most underrated move any team has made all offseason. "While Tagovailoa has struggled in recent seasons, he has all the tools to succeed following his release from the Miami Dolphins," Kay wrote. "Although he was brought in as an insurance option, his impressive pedigree and proven ability to run a high-octane offense may be the key to unlocking the vast untapped potential of the Falcons' offense."

That's high praise, but the numbers back it up. In 2024, Tagovailoa led the NFL with a 72.9% completion rate. The year before, he topped the league in passing yards with 4,624. And in 2022, he posted the best passer rating in football at 105.5. When he has a strong supporting cast, he produces at an elite level.

Now, the path to a comeback isn't automatic. First, Tagovailoa will have to prove he's a better option than Michael Penix Jr. during training camp. Then, he'll need to stay healthy—especially avoiding the types of hits that have led to concussions in the past. But the pieces are in place for a resurgent season. Atlanta boasts a respectable offensive line, an improving wide receiver corps, a reliable tight end, and arguably the best running back in the game. Add in new offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski—a coach known for getting the most out his quarterbacks—and this offense suddenly has real potential.

For Falcons fans, this isn't just a low-risk signing. It's a move that could turn the entire season around. If Tagovailoa recaptures his pre-2025 form, Atlanta might have found the steal of the offseason—and the key to finally unlocking their offense's full potential.
