Atlanta Braves fans, there's finally some clarity on Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return—and it comes with a cautious but promising update from the dugout.
The superstar right fielder has been sidelined since May 2 after straining his left hamstring while sprinting to first base against the Colorado Rockies. It was a frustrating blow for Acuña, who had been a model of durability up to that point, playing in every game of the 2026 season. Unfortunately, injuries have become an all-too-familiar chapter in his story.
Over his nine seasons in Atlanta, Acuña has endured two torn ACLs (one in each knee), each requiring lengthy rehab stints, along with a series of nagging setbacks. Yet, true to form, the five-time All-Star has been working relentlessly to get back on the field. He's been spotted taking batting practice and running full sprints in the outfield—encouraging signs that his return is drawing near.
But manager Walt Weiss is drawing a firm line in the dirt. According to Braves reporter Barrett Sallee, Weiss stated on Friday that Acuña will likely be activated only when he's ready to play defense. “Don’t hold me to that,” Weiss quickly added, leaving the door slightly ajar. Still, the message is clear: Atlanta wants their MVP-caliber weapon back at full strength, not limited to designated hitter duties.
Acuña has already been ruled out for the remainder of the current homestand, but a return next week remains a possibility if his progress continues. The Braves are prioritizing his long-term health over a rushed comeback.
When he does step back into the lineup—presumably in right field—Acuña will be aiming to rediscover the elite form that made him a National League MVP, Rookie of the Year, and three-time Silver Slugger. Through 34 games this season, he was hitting .250, a solid but unspectacular line by his own sky-high standards. Once healthy, expect the dynamic outfielder to remind everyone why he's one of the most electric players in baseball.
For Braves Country, patience is the name of the game. But with Acuña's track record of defying odds, the wait should be worth it.
