The Copa do Brasil delivered a dramatic night of cup football this Wednesday, as two Série A giants were sent packing by lower-division opponents. Following São Paulo's shock defeat to Juventude, Atlético-MG suffered a painful exit at the hands of Ceará.

Known affectionately as Vozão, Ceará booked their spot in the round of 16 with a thrilling penalty shootout victory, following a 2-1 win at the Castelão. The Minas Gerais side entered the match with a slim advantage from the first leg (2-1), but the tie quickly turned against them.

Just three minutes in, disaster struck for Atlético-MG. Mamady Cissé was shown a red card after hauling down Fernandinho inside the box, gifting Ceará a penalty. Alex Silva stepped up and calmly converted, leveling the aggregate score and shifting the momentum.

Before the 20-minute mark, Melk thought he had doubled the lead, but VAR intervened, ruling out the goal for a foul on goalkeeper Everson. However, Ceará remained relentless, and their pressure soon paid off. A defensive mix-up saw Renan Lodi clear a shot off the line, only for the ball to ricochet off Everson's back and into the net. It was a cruel blow for Atlético, but a deserved one for the hosts, who controlled the game from start to finish.

Atlético struggled to mount any response—their first shot on target didn't come until the 41st minute of the second half, through Cassierra. The Colombian striker then turned provider, delivering a fine pass for Kauã Pascini to pull one back and make it 2-1 on the night. But it was too little, too late, as Ceará held firm to force penalties and ultimately advance.

For Atlético-MG, it's a bitter pill to swallow—a reminder that in knockout football, no lead is ever safe. For Ceará, it's a statement win that proves they belong among Brazil's best.
