This is an ironic need for the A's in 2026.

The Oakland Athletics are marching toward an unexpected playoff push in 2026, but they're facing a familiar—and ironic—dilemma: they need a closer. Sitting at 22-21 and atop the AL West, the A's have been powered by an explosive lineup featuring Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers, who are both playing like All-Stars. Yet, as the trade deadline approaches, their bullpen remains a glaring weakness.

The irony is hard to miss. Just one year ago, at the 2025 trade deadline, the A's dealt away arguably the best closer in baseball, Mason Miller, to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster move that brought back top prospect Leo De Vries and more. Now, with the team in contention, they're scrambling to fill the void Miller left behind.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently identified closer as the A's top need for the 2026 trade deadline. "Tough to say at this point if anything close to a reliable closer will be available at the deadline, but the A's need one if they expect to remain atop this division," he wrote.

Currently, the A's don't have a set closer. Jack Perkins, Joel Kuhnle, Mark Leiter, and Hogan Harris have all taken turns in high-leverage situations, but none have seized the role. Consistency has been elusive, and with the AL West race tightening, the bullpen's instability could cost them down the stretch.

While the return for Miller—headlined by De Vries—was a win for the franchise's long-term rebuild, the immediate need for a reliable ninth-inning arm is undeniable. The trade deadline market for closers is uncertain, but the A's will need to find a reliever capable of stepping into the spotlight. It's a classic case of selling a star to build for the future, only to find that the future has arrived sooner than expected.
