The A's add another lefty to their bullpen.

The Athletics have made a move to bolster their bullpen, acquiring veteran left-hander Jose Suarez from the Seattle Mariners in a cash trade announced Thursday. The 28-year-old swingman brings eight years of Major League experience to Oakland, though his recent numbers raise some eyebrows—he carries a 5.34 ERA over his career.

Suarez, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners earlier this week, is out of minor league options, meaning he'll head straight to the A's active roster. He's logged 63 starts in 115 career appearances since debuting with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, giving manager Mark Kotsay flexibility in how to use him. According to MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams, Suarez "seems ticketed for the bullpen—at least for now," despite his history as both a starter and reliever.

The lefty's 2026 season has been rocky so far. In eight outings with the Atlanta Braves before a brief two-inning stint with Seattle, he allowed 12 earned runs and 22 hits in just 16.1 innings. Still, the A's are betting on his veteran savvy to stabilize a bullpen that could use a reliable arm.

To clear a roster spot for Suarez, Oakland designated outfielder Junior Perez for assignment. It's a low-risk move for a team looking to add depth, and Suarez's experience could prove valuable as the season progresses. Keep an eye on how Kotsay deploys him—if Suarez can rediscover his form, this trade might pay off down the stretch.
