Athletic Bilbao has made a bold move for the future, announcing the appointment of German coach Edin Terzić on a two-year deal. The 43-year-old tactician, who will be officially presented at the start of next season, brings a wealth of European experience to the Basque Country club.
Terzić is best known for his two stints at Borussia Dortmund, where he left an indelible mark. He guided the Black and Yellows to DFB-Pokal glory in 2021 and came agonizingly close to dethroning Bayern Munich in a thrilling Bundesliga title race in 2023. Perhaps his crowning achievement came in 2024, when he led Dortmund all the way to the Champions League final, only to fall short against Real Madrid.
Before his head coaching success, Terzić honed his craft in Dortmund's youth academy and served as an assistant coach at West Ham in England and Besiktas in Turkey. He departed Dortmund at the end of the 2023-24 season, and now embarks on a new challenge in La Liga.
Terzić steps into big shoes, replacing the legendary Ernesto Valverde, who holds the record for most games coached in Athletic Bilbao's history. With four rounds remaining in the current season, Athletic sits eighth in the table and is still in the hunt for a European qualification spot. Their next test comes Sunday at home against Valencia.
