Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi has opened up about the future of director Tony D'Amico, confirming the highly-rated sporting director is attracting interest from several top clubs, including Milan and Roma.
"I have an extraordinary rapport with D'Amico. What he has done for us over the years is something I've seen up close," Percassi told Sky Sport Italia. Since arriving in Bergamo four years ago, D'Amico has overseen a remarkable run of success, with Atalanta finishing third, fourth, fifth, and likely seventh this season.
The speculation has been intense, with D'Amico linked to a potential reunion with former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma, or a move to Milan should Igli Tare depart. Percassi acknowledged the situation realistically: "I am aware that, like with our players who are courted by other clubs, the same is true of our directors."
With just two games remaining this season, Percassi hinted that a change could be on the horizon. "Our rapport could probably come to a conclusion, but our mutual esteem will remain forever. We'll see what happens. The important thing for Atalanta now is to ensure we are ready if Tony does decide to try a new experience, and bring in a replacement who is up to the same standards."
And that replacement could be a familiar name in Italian football. Reports suggest Atalanta have already agreed terms with Cristiano Giuntoli, the former Juventus and Napoli director of sport. Percassi didn't shy away from the rumors: "Giuntoli is one of the best directors in Italian football, he has experience in every level of the sport. We'll see what happens. I am well aware that Cristiano Giuntoli has many clubs calling."
For Atalanta, a club that has consistently punched above its weight, the potential double change in the boardroom would be a major test. But with Percassi's clear admiration for both men, the future—whether with D'Amico or Giuntoli—looks to be in capable hands.
