The Houston Astros have suffered a major blow, as star shortstop Carlos Correa is reportedly out indefinitely after injuring his ankle during pregame warmups on Tuesday.
Correa was a late scratch from the Astros' 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers after tweaking his ankle while taking swings in the batting cage. According to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, the injury occurred before the game even began. Correa is scheduled to meet with a foot specialist on Wednesday morning to determine the full extent of the damage, but early reports suggest he could be sidelined for "weeks, or maybe even months."
This is a devastating setback for a Houston team that has already been battered by injuries. Correa, who is batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs this season, is a cornerstone of the Astros' lineup and clubhouse. "Carlos is a cornerstone in this clubhouse," first baseman Christian Walker told MLB.com. "The guys lean on him. We look to him for leadership. I know that his presence will continue to be felt, but we're just going to continue to pray for him and stay positive."
Correa's absence adds to a growing list of Astros on the injured list. Shortstop Jeremy Pena is still recovering from a fractured finger and hamstring strain, while opening day starters Yanier Diaz, Joey Loperfido, and Jake Meyers have all gone down with various ailments. The team's depth is being tested early in the season.
Despite the adversity, the Astros managed to grind out a win on Tuesday night at Daikin Park. Early home runs from Walker and Braden Shewmake provided just enough offense to hold off the Dodgers, who saw Shohei Ohtani pitch seven strong innings with eight strikeouts. The victory improved Houston's record to 15-22, though they've shown signs of life by winning four of their last six games. The two teams wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
For now, the Astros will have to rally without their star shortstop, hoping for good news from the foot specialist while leaning on their next-man-up mentality.
