This would be a tough result for the Astros this year.

The Houston Astros entered the 2026 season as World Series contenders, but a disastrous start has completely flipped the script. At 11-19, they currently hold the worst record in the American League, forcing analysts to predict a painful pivot at the trade deadline.

While the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies have also stumbled out of the gate, the Astros' struggles feel especially jarring. After years of dominance, their pitching staff has been battered, and the offense hasn't been able to compensate. According to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, the front office may have no choice but to become sellers—though it wouldn't be a full-blown fire sale like the 2021 Chicago Cubs. Instead, they'd look to move expiring assets to restock for the future.

On the offensive side, Yordan Alvarez is the elephant in the room. Trading him would net a historic haul, but it would also signal a full rebuild—something Houston likely wants to avoid if they hope to bounce back quickly. More realistic trade chips are Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker. Paredes, despite a .687 OPS this season, offers right-handed power that contenders often crave. Walker, meanwhile, is having a standout year with a .956 OPS and could be a perfect fit for a team like the Pittsburgh Pirates in need of first base pop.

On the mound, names like Lance McCullers Jr., Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, and Enyel De Los Santos could draw interest from teams looking to bolster their bullpen or rotation down the stretch. But for Astros fans, watching any of these players go would be a tough pill to swallow—especially after years of October baseball.

With the season slipping away, Houston will have to decide soon: hold on for a miracle, or make the hard calls now to build for tomorrow.
