Aston Villa brought Douglas Luiz back on loan from Juventus in January 2026, hoping to recapture the magic of his first spell at the club. But so far, the reunion has fallen flat—and it's raising serious questions about whether they should trigger the €25m option to make the move permanent this summer.

The 27-year-old Brazilian came off the bench during Villa's dominant 4-0 Europa League semi-final win over Nottingham Forest on May 7, but his limited role told the real story. He hasn't started a match since a 2-0 victory over Lille back in March, with Unai Emery clearly favoring other midfield options.

Across loan spells at both Forest and Villa this season, Luiz has managed just one goal in 21 appearances—a far cry from the electrifying form that once made him a fan favorite at Villa Park. During his first five seasons with the club, he was a midfield maestro, even delivering a standout 10-goal, 10-assist campaign in 2023-24. That version of Luiz feels like a distant memory now.

His fitness and consistency have taken a noticeable dip since his move to Juventus, and a chaotic stint at Forest—where he played under three different managers—only added to the instability. Over in Italy, reports from Calciomercato suggest that Juventus now see Luiz as nearly impossible to sell, especially given his €30m book value, despite the initial €50m price tag. It's a situation that's starting to echo the club's struggles with Arthur Melo, who has been sent out on four separate loans since his big-money move from Barcelona.

For Villa, the decision should be clear: pass on the €25m option. Luiz's second stint hasn't been convincing, and Emery's reluctance to start him speaks volumes. As the club pushes for European football in 2026-27, every squad member needs to be reliable and high-energy—and right now, Luiz simply isn't delivering.
