Aston Villa have emerged as the frontrunners in the race to sign Real Betis' electrifying winger Ez Abde this summer, but the big question remains: can they afford the €40 million price tag?

The 24-year-old Moroccan international has been lighting up La Liga, and his standout performances have caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United. But with Barcelona making it clear they won't be bringing him back to the Camp Nou, the path is clear for Villa to make their move.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona have privately moved on from a potential reunion with Abde, despite holding 20% of his sell-on rights. The Catalan giants valued a return at roughly €30 million, but Real Betis are holding out for closer to €40 million and are happy to sell to the highest bidder. Barcelona have even explored selling their stake back to Betis for quick cash—a familiar tactic they've used before.

So, what makes Abde worth the investment? The numbers speak for themselves. In 27 La Liga appearances this season, he racked up nine goals and eight assists, with a non-penalty expected goals (xG) of 0.47 per 90 minutes—placing him in the top 4% of all players in the league. His 17 direct goal involvements and an expected assists (xA) of 0.30 per 90 minutes also rank him among the most creative threats in Spain.

For Aston Villa, this is a gamble with serious upside. Abde's ability to take on defenders and his constant danger in front of goal make him one of the most lethal wingers in La Liga. But at €40 million, the price is steep. Villa will need to weigh the potential payoff against the risk, especially as they look to build on their momentum and compete on multiple fronts.

Whether they pull the trigger or not, one thing is clear: Ez Abde is a player who can change a game in an instant—and that kind of talent doesn't come cheap.
