In a dramatic Premier League clash that saw Liverpool fall 4-2 to Aston Villa, manager Arne Slot didn't hold back in his post-match assessment, offering a raw and honest take on what went wrong for the Reds.
"After the score went to 2-1, the game just slipped away from us," Slot admitted to BBC's Match of the Day. "We actually started the second half well and had control for the first 10 minutes, but we weren't creating chances—and that's been a recurring theme this season."
The turning point came at 1-1, when Liverpool were close to taking the lead themselves before conceding in a manner Slot described as uncharacteristic. "The way we gave up that goal at 2-1 is something we haven't seen from ourselves this season. We've conceded too many goals overall—it's hard to believe unless you're living through it. After that, Villa were the better team, and the match got away from us."
When pressed about Liverpool's troubling away form, Slot didn't sugarcoat the issue. "Every team struggles more on the road, but for a club of our stature, we've dropped far too many points and suffered too many losses away from home. The root cause is simple: we're conceding goals far too easily."
The Dutch manager also pointed to missed opportunities in front of goal. "We're creating chances, but we haven't been as clinical this season as we were last year. It doesn't help that Alexander Isak has barely featured for us and Hugo Ekitike has been unavailable. That's just the reality we're facing."
Despite the heavy defeat—Liverpool's first time conceding four goals in a Premier League match since their 4-4 draw with Southampton—Slot remained focused on the bigger picture. "This isn't about me or my frustration. It's disappointing for everyone—the players, the staff, and especially the fans. We know what we need to do next week against Brentford."
Asked about his position as manager, Slot was quick to redirect the conversation. "My focus is on the Brentford game. We need to earn the support of our fans by starting that match with aggression and quality. The combination of fan support and a strong performance will get us where we want to be: qualifying for the Champions League."
