Unai Emery has issued an apology to Liverpool's Harvey Elliott after the midfielder made just four Premier League appearances during his season-long loan at Aston Villa

Unai Emery has openly admitted that Harvey Elliott's frustrating loan spell at Aston Villa this season has been "embarrassing for everyone involved." The Liverpool midfielder joined Villa on deadline day with high hopes, but things haven't gone according to plan.

Elliott, who arrived on a season-long loan, has made just four Premier League appearances for the Villans. The reason? A tricky clause in his contract—a £35 million obligation to buy would have been triggered after 10 league appearances. To avoid that hefty fee, Emery has deliberately kept the 20-year-old on the sidelines.

It's a tough spot for Elliott, who can't join another European club this season after featuring for both Liverpool and Villa. As Villa prepare to face Elliott's parent club in their final home game on Friday, Emery didn't shy away from addressing the awkward situation.

"To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult—or it is easy, but it is not the moment," Emery told reporters, via the Liverpool Echo. "Of course, it is something embarrassing for everyone involved. My apologies for Harvey Elliott are every day in my mind. But it is about responsibility. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility. It is something, as a human and as a person, how the season has gone has been difficult."

The Villa boss had previously addressed his decision back in February, explaining the delicate balance between sport and business. "I spoke with him. We have been fair because there are two ways: one way is a sport, the second is business," Emery said. "We'll be fair in case, because we are trying it, and I told him, we are opening the door to play with us, because he can help us. But it's not only in my way and on my side. The other side is Liverpool. If they take off the clauses to play matches and for us to buy him, (I said to him) 'You are going to play here with us, it's a sport decision.'"

For young talents like Elliott, loan moves are meant to be a stepping stone—but sometimes, the fine print gets in the way. It's a reminder that in modern football, the business side can overshadow even the best intentions on the pitch.
