Texas A&M's 2026 roster is taking shape, and after the final spring scrimmage at the Maroon & White Game, head coach Mike Elko and his staff have a clearer picture of where the Aggies need to improve before preseason camp kicks off in August. One area that's already looking stronger? The running back room.
On Thursday, the Aggies picked up a commitment from transfer running back DD Murray, the younger brother of freshman defensive tackle DJ Sanders. While Murray wasn't a highly touted recruit coming out of high school—he originally signed with Arkansas State as a three-star prospect in the 2025 class—he didn't see the field for the Red Wolves last season. That doesn't tell the full story, though.
Murray's high school numbers are eye-popping: 3,935 rushing yards and 65 touchdowns in just 29 games, averaging a blistering 9.2 yards per carry and over 100 yards per game. He also showed versatility as a pass-catcher, hauling in 17 receptions for 447 yards and eight touchdowns. That kind of production makes him one of the more intriguing additions to a backfield that desperately needed depth after struggling in that department the past two seasons.
With four years of eligibility remaining, Murray arrives in College Station looking to bulk up and refine his game. And there's an added bonus: he'll be playing alongside his brother for the first time since their days at Bellville High School.
So where does Murray fit in? The Aggies' backfield is led by senior Rueben Owens and rising sophomore Jamarion Morrow, with redshirt freshman Tiger Riden and freshmen KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker also in the mix. It's a crowded room, but Murray's high school résumé suggests he could carve out a role, especially if he adjusts quickly to the college game. At the very least, he provides new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins with a solid floor of options—and a potential spark if the Aggies find themselves in a blowout win over Missouri State in the season opener.
Either way, Texas A&M's running back depth is no longer the glaring question mark it was a year ago. And for a team looking to take the next step under Elko, that's a welcome development.
