Former Bristol City midfielder Jimmy Mann, a member of the Ashton Gate Eight in 1982 who saved the club from ruin, dies aged 73.

Jimmy Mann, the former Bristol City midfielder and one of the legendary 'Ashton Gate Eight', has passed away at the age of 73. Mann's legacy extends far beyond his 283 appearances and 45 goals for the Robins—he was part of a group of eight players who made the ultimate sacrifice to save the club from bankruptcy in 1982.

On February 3, 1982, Mann and seven teammates—Geoff Merrick, Gerry Sweeney, Dave Rodgers, Peter Aitken, Chris Garland, Trevor Tainton, and Julian Marshall—tore up their contracts to prevent Bristol City from going under. It was a selfless act that cost them their careers but ensured the club's survival. Today, a plaque at Ashton Gate commemorates their heroism, and they remain local icons.

Mann joined Bristol City from Leeds United in 1974, initially as a striker before shifting to midfield under manager Alan Dicks. He was a key figure in the team that clinched promotion from Division Two in 1976, featuring in 36 games that season. Known for his powerful shots and relentless effort, Mann later played for Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, and Scunthorpe United.

"Jimmy Mann was known for wonderful shots at goal for Bristol City," said club president Marina Dolman. "He was a player who gave his all and was, and has remained, very popular with us grateful Bristol City supporters, a very special player. I send my love to his dear wife and family."

For fans of the beautiful game, Mann's story is a reminder of the passion and loyalty that define football. His legacy lives on not just in the record books, but in the very existence of the club he helped save. Whether you're a Robins supporter or simply love tales of sportsmanship, Mann's dedication inspires us to wear our colors with pride.
