With the NBA playoffs just one week away, the Houston Rockets are fine-tuning their lineup for a deep postseason run. A key question mark has been the fifth starting spot, a role left open since Fred VanVleet's season-ending knee injury last September. While stars Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Jabari Smith Jr. form a formidable core, head coach Ime Udoka has experimented with different players to complete the puzzle.
That final starting role has been a revolving door all season. Josh Okogie held it down for the first two months, Tari Eason took over through the winter, and rookie Reed Sheppard has seen significant time there since mid-March. However, as the Rockets (51-29, tied for 4th in the West) enter their final regular-season games, they appear to be circling back to their original choice.
Okogie earned his second consecutive start in Friday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, following a strong performance against Philadelphia where his defensive energy and 11 rebounds drew praise from Udoka. This move signals a strategic shift as the postseason approaches, emphasizing physicality and defensive versatility.
Coach Udoka broke down the decision-making process, highlighting the unique value each candidate brings. "With Josh out there, he started the season in that role," Udoka noted. "He’ll take some of the defensive pressure off of Amen and guard the best guy." He contrasted this with Sheppard's skillset, which offers additional ball-handling and a different dynamic in the pick-and-roll with Durant and Thompson.
The ultimate strategy will be fluid. "The playoffs will be matchup based," Udoka stated, emphasizing that Houston's depth allows them to adapt. "We see what we like and don’t like with the units and how we can stagger them... and insert other guys into the lineup, as well." As the intensity ramps up, the Rockets' ability to tailor their lineup to any opponent could be their greatest asset.
