Arthur Fils has eased injury concerns after being forced to retire from his second-round match at the Italian Open, offering a reassuring update that should delight tennis fans ahead of the French Open.
The 21-year-old Frenchman was facing Andrea Pellegrino in Rome when he pulled out mid-match due to hip pain. However, speaking afterward, Fils explained that the decision was purely precautionary, prioritizing his fitness for the upcoming Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
"Felt something during the match in Rome, so we decided to run all the necessary tests with the team," Fils shared on his Instagram story. "No need to take any risks at this stage of the season. Already back to work and fully focused on Paris."
This measured approach is especially understandable given Fils' recent injury history. A stress fracture in his back suffered during last year's clay-court swing sidelined him for nearly all of 2025, halting what had been a meteoric rise through the ATP rankings.
Since returning to action in February, however, the young star has been in blistering form. He has reached at least the quarter-finals in seven of nine tournaments played, and just last month captured the biggest title of his career at the Barcelona Open. That victory, combined with consistent deep runs, is expected to lift him to world number 17 after the Italian Open—a career-high ranking that would set up a third-round clash with a top-16 seed at the French Open.
For fans and followers of Fils, the message is clear: the hip issue is minor, and the focus has already shifted to Paris. With his game clicking and his body on the mend, the 21-year-old looks poised to make some noise on the biggest stage in clay-court tennis.
