The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a pivotal 2026 NFL Draft with a major question mark under center. With just Mason Rudolph and Will Howard on the roster and the Aaron Rodgers saga still unresolved, speculation has been rampant that the team might use its first-round pick to secure a future franchise quarterback.
However, team president Art Rooney II has thrown cold water on that popular theory. In a recent interview, Rooney effectively took quarterbacks off the board for the No. 21 overall selection, shifting the draft conversation for Steelers Nation.
"I think I can tell you one thing, it’s probably not going to be a quarterback," Rooney stated. "But beyond that it’s wide open... we have 12 selections in this Draft. So we have an opportunity to really add some talent to the roster."
This declaration means prospects like Ty Simpson, frequently mocked to Pittsburgh, are unlikely to hear their name called by the Steelers on night one. Rooney's comments suggest a strategy focused on building a complete team, leveraging their league-high 12 picks to address multiple needs.
While a first-round QB is now off the table, the Steelers' quarterback room is far from settled. The team could still target a developmental signal-caller on Day 2 or 3, adding competition behind Rudolph and Howard. For now, the focus shifts to which position—be it offensive line, cornerback, or receiver—will be the priority when the Steelers are first on the clock.
