The young Gunners came out fighting after the break, with Louis Zecevic John pulling one back with a brilliant finish in the 72nd minute, but it wasn't enough as Reading held on for a 2-1 win. Arsenal Under-18s coach Adam Birchall didn't mince words when reflecting on the defeat, pointing to a sluggish first half and poor decision-making on the ball as the main culprits.
Fresh off an impressive 2-1 away victory against West Ham, the Arsenal youngsters were hoping to build some momentum. But instead, they found themselves chasing the game after Reading struck early in both halves. "I'm disappointed with both the first-half performance and, of course, the result," Birchall said. "We challenged the players to build on the previous win and, as I've said in recent interviews, we want winning to become a habit. In the first half, we found it really difficult."
The coach was clear that the issue wasn't effort—it was how they used the ball. "We were far too vertical in the first half, playing in straight lines and not switching play across the back line. That meant we weren't creating gaps in midfield," Birchall explained. "When we started to move the ball better in the second half, you could really see the difference. Our goal summed that up perfectly—it was probably the best team goal we've scored this season. The movement created more space, Reading found it harder to cover, and our midfielders were able to get on the ball more often, use the wide areas, and create chances."
Birchall also praised the substitutes for injecting energy and a clearer attacking threat, but admitted the team just couldn't finish their chances. "There were positives after the break, but overall we're disappointed," he said. With lessons learned on the importance of intelligent ball movement and building from the back, the young Gunners will be eager to put things right in their next outing.
