For 18 seasons, Ruth Ann Ahnen has been a cornerstone of Arrowhead High School's swimming and diving program—and now, her remarkable legacy is being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Milwaukee High School Sports Awards on June 15.
Ahnen retired after the 2025 season, capping a storied 13-year tenure as head coach of the girls' team. Under her leadership, Arrowhead became a state powerhouse, capturing team titles in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2022. The Warhawks also finished as state runners-up six times, a testament to the sustained excellence Ahnen built.
Her coaching journey began well before Arrowhead. She honed her skills as an age-group coach at the Quakertown, Pennsylvania YMCA and Pennridge Aquatics Swim Club from 2003 to 2005. After moving to Wisconsin in 2006, she spent 16 years coaching with the Lake Country Swim Team. At Arrowhead, she wore many hats—boys diving coach, boys JV coach, and girls varsity reserve coach—before taking the helm of the girls' program. In 2022, the Wisconsin Swim Coaches Association named her Coach of the Year.
Ahnen's own swimming career was equally impressive. A four-time Missouri state champion and state record holder at Parkway West High School, she knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. Her personal drive extends beyond the pool: she completed her first Ironman in 2022, with three Arrowhead seniors cheering her on every step of the way.
But Ahnen's impact reaches far beyond the lanes. She has spearheaded fundraisers for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin, organized food drives for the Hartland Food Pantry, and established a scholarship fund in memory of a former JV swimmer lost in a car crash—raising tens of thousands of dollars for causes close to her heart.
The Milwaukee High School Sports Awards will take place at the Brookfield Conference Center at 7 p.m. on June 15, with Green Bay Packers safety Evan Williams as the guest speaker. It's a fitting stage to honor a coach who has shaped champions in the water and in the community.
