Arrow McLaren driver Christian Lundgaard delivered a masterclass performance at the Sonsio Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, denying Alex Palou a fourth consecutive victory in the event and securing his first win since the 2023 Toronto race.
The Copenhagen native executed a daring pass through the Turns 5 and 6 chicane with just 18 laps remaining, surging past David Malukas and never looking back. Lundgaard led 20 of the 85 laps on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile circuit, crossing the finish line with a commanding 14.339-second margin over the field.
"I really didn't expect this today. I hoped for it. This was a long wait for this win," said Lundgaard, who earned his third podium of the season and gave Arrow McLaren its 28th victory. "Especially around this place, I've always been fast. It's been time after time after time disappointment. We did it. Let's go!"
The victory carries extra significance as a prelude to the NTT IndyCar Series' marquee Indianapolis 500 on May 24. Palou, who had won three of the first five races this season and captured the pole position for Saturday's event, finished fifth after being outmaneuvered by third-place Graham Rahal and fourth-place Josef Newgarden as well.
For Lundgaard, this win represents redemption after a difficult 2024 season with the team. "It's a lot of unfinished business for me around here," he explained. "Being competitive here pretty much every year except last year, I really wanted to get some redemption for that. We worked hard to try to figure out where we really went wrong last year. I think we obviously did, but it just feels awesome."
The result sends a clear message to the rest of the IndyCar paddock: Palou can be contained, and Arrow McLaren is a force to be reckoned with heading into the biggest race of the year.
