Liverpool's summer spending spree raised plenty of eyebrows, with a staggering £204 million invested in strikers Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. Now, with the season reaching its critical climax, manager Arne Slot is hoping that very investment pays off in the race for Champions League qualification.

The decision to double down on the number nine position was heavily debated, especially as the Reds navigated other areas of need. However, the brutal timing of Ekitike's season-ending Achilles injury against PSG has suddenly made that depth look like a stroke of foresight. With the young French forward sidelined, the timely return of Swedish international Alexander Isak from his own injury layoff could be the catalyst Liverpool needs.

Ahead of the high-stakes Merseyside derby, Slot addressed the strategy, noting the unpredictable nature of a long campaign. "A lot of people were debating why we signed two number nines," Slot said. "Now, all of a sudden, it looks good. You can't write the script... on the day after Alex is back for his first start, the other one leaves with a long injury."

While Isak's return is a major boost, Slot was careful to manage expectations, stating the striker is "not ready to play 90" minutes yet. His presence, however, offers a crucial focal point for Liverpool's attack as they battle to secure a top-five finish.

The manager also expressed sympathy for Ekitike, whose promising start at Anfield has been cruelly interrupted. "Devastating for him," Slot said of the injury. "Our thoughts are with him at this time, missing out on so many special moments." The focus now shifts to the pitch, where Slot will be counting on his remaining firepower to deliver the results needed for a return to Europe's elite competition.
