Liverpool fans, get ready for some summer transfer buzz—Arne Slot has reportedly been given the green light to pursue a £24 million centre-back, and the name on everyone's lips is Sam Beukema. The Reds are looking to bolster their defensive ranks after sporting director Richard Hughes made some forward-thinking moves by snapping up young talents like Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, and Mor Talla Ndiaye. While these signings promise a bright future, their lack of top-flight experience means throwing them into the deep end right away could be a risky gamble.

Right now, Liverpool's senior center-back options are surrounded by question marks. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both under contract until 2027, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Premier League champions entertain offers for the 28-year-old Englishman this summer. More concerning, though, is Ibrahima Konaté's contract situation—he claimed a few weeks ago that a new deal was all but done, yet there's still no pen to paper. That uncertainty has sparked links to defenders like Micky van de Ven and Goncalo Inácio, but one long-time favorite of Slot's is now emerging as a top target.

Enter Sam Beukema, a 27-year-old Dutch center-back who Slot first coveted during his Feyenoord days, when Beukema was turning heads at Go Ahead Eagles. Slot missed out on him back then, and Beukema went on to build a solid career in Serie A, first with Bologna in 2023 and then with Napoli last summer. But his move to the now-outgoing Serie A champions hasn't quite gone as planned—despite winning the Coppa Italia in 2024/25, Napoli are reportedly willing to cash in on the defender. For Slot, this could be the perfect chance to finally land his man and add some much-needed experience to Liverpool's backline.
