The Arizona Wildcats' secondary is undergoing a major transformation this spring, tasked with replacing a trio of safeties—Treydan Stukes, Dalton Johnson, and Genesis Smith—now headed to the NFL. Filling that void is the team's top defensive priority, and the coaching staff has turned to the transfer portal to assemble a competitive new committee.

Safeties coach Brett Arce has brought in three experienced players: Malcolm Hartzog Jr., Lee Mollette III, and Cam Chapa. While the group is still in the early stages of gelling, Arce is encouraged by the progress. "Super proud of the progress," Arce said. "Those are big shoes to fill... but these guys are doing a great job. I feel like we have a lot of depth in there right now, and it’s a heck of a competition."

Starting jobs won't be finalized until closer to the September 5th opener against NAU, but the Wildcats prioritized game experience in their portal search. "There’s no substitution for snaps played in a game," Arce emphasized. "We found guys to try and come in that had those snaps and played in some big-time games. And I think that’s super valuable."

One of the most intriguing additions is Malcolm Hartzog Jr., who brings a proven track record from Nebraska. Despite being listed at 5-foot-8, Hartzog's tenacity and strength have made him a standout. "He’s a pitbull, man," Arce said. "That dude is tough. He’s one of the strongest guys in the weight room. His quickness and his strength... he can match up with anybody, similar to what Stukes did."

Hartzog's resume backs up the praise. Over 32 games and 1,700 snaps for the Cornhuskers, he amassed 108 tackles, 13 pass breakups, and eight interceptions, including a game-sealing pick against Cincinnati. His story is a testament to how technique and grit can overcome physical measurements, a mindset that defines Arizona's new-look safety room as they build a cohesive unit for the fall.
