The Arizona Wildcats are keeping the momentum rolling on the recruiting trail, and this time, they're adding some serious firepower to their backfield. Fresh off a standout 2025 season, head coach Brent Brennan and his staff have landed a commitment from Wayne Shanks Jr., a 3-star running back out of Houston, Texas.

Shanks, who plays for The Kinkaid School, brings impressive size and versatility to Tucson. At 5-foot-11 and around 200 pounds, he's built like a workhorse back who can break tackles and churn out tough yards. His numbers speak for themselves: as a junior in 2025, he rushed for 1,787 yards and 24 touchdowns on 242 carries, while also proving to be a reliable target out of the backfield with 26 catches for 352 yards and six more scores. Even as a sophomore in 2024, he was a force, posting 1,579 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns to go with 223 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Shanks' commitment is a major win for the Wildcats, especially considering the competition he turned down. He held 23 reported offers from powerhouse programs like Kansas, Notre Dame, Baylor, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Houston, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. That's a serious list of suitors, and Arizona's ability to close the deal speaks volumes about the program's rising appeal.

Ranked as a high 3-star prospect by 247Sports, Shanks is listed as the No. 43 running back nationally and the No. 82 player in Texas in their internal rankings. The Composite system slots him at No. 583 overall, No. 40 among running backs, and No. 84 in the Lone Star State. He recently hosted visits from offensive coordinator Seth Doege and running backs coach Lyle Moevao, which clearly helped seal the deal.

Shanks becomes the fourth member of Arizona's 2027 recruiting class, joining three other offensive commits—including 3-star California wide receiver Braylen Ross, who announced his decision in early May. With a dynamic playmaker like Shanks in the fold, the Wildcats are building a foundation that should have fans excited for what's ahead in the desert.
