The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the middle of a frustrating offensive slump, and last night's game only deepened the concern. For the seventh straight game, the D-backs were held to six hits or fewer—tying a franchise record that was last matched in April 2022 and previously in August 2011. Over this stretch, the team's OPS sits at a dismal .477, which is actually lower than during either of those previous streaks. Yet, thanks to a resilient pitching staff, Arizona has managed a 3-4 record during this current run, compared to 2-5 in 2022 and 1-6 in 2011.
To put this in perspective, no Major League team has endured a longer streak of six hits or fewer since the Los Angeles Angels went nine games in April last year. In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates had an eight-game streak in June 2023. And if you're wondering about the last team to reach double digits, look no further than the 1968 Houston Astros, who went 11 games—the year before the mound was lowered to help hitters.
But there's reason for hope. The D-backs managed to plate three runs in garbage time last night, thanks to a Rangers reliever who struggled to find the strike zone. While those runs came more from walks than hits, they at least padded the box score. Over the past seven games, Arizona has batted just .152—the second-lowest average for a seven-game span in franchise history. The only worse stretch came in April 2022, when the team hit an astonishing .135 over eight games (going 28-for-208). Interestingly, that 2022 team actually scored three more runs than the current streak, largely because they hit twice as many home runs (6 vs. 3).
As the D-backs look to break out of this offensive funk, fans will be hoping for a spark at the plate—and maybe a little help from some new gear. After all, a fresh look can sometimes bring fresh energy to the lineup.
