Arizona Diamondbacks Gameday Thread, #31: 5/1 @ Cubs

The Arizona Diamondbacks are shaking things up ahead of their May 1 matchup against the Chicago Cubs, making a series of roster moves that signal both recovery and rotation adjustments. With the 40-man roster now sitting at 39, the team is bringing back a key player while refreshing the bullpen for the long grind ahead.

First up, catcher Gabriel Moreno has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list after battling a strained left oblique. It's a welcome return for the Diamondbacks, though obliques are notoriously finicky—so all eyes will be on how seamlessly he slides back into action. Moreno missed 16 games due to this injury, adding another chapter to his growing list of health setbacks. His return also gives veteran James McCann a much-needed breather behind the plate. McCann has been carrying a heavy load, and while the team had called up Brandyn Garcia as an alternative, Garcia saw minimal playing time—just one start and a handful of late-inning defensive swaps, totaling only 10 innings in the field since April 14. With Adrian Del Castillo logging far more time at catcher, it raises the question of whether Garcia's initial call-up was truly necessary.

In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks have recalled left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia from Triple-A Reno, assigning him uniform No. 55. Garcia, who came to Arizona as part of the return from Seattle in the Josh Naylor trade, has had a mixed bag of results. After the trade, he made 12 appearances for the D-backs with a 5.84 ERA and a 13:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 12.1 innings. Down in Reno, however, he's looked sharper with a 2.19 ERA—though his control has been a bit loose, with an 18:10 K:BB ratio in the same 12.1 innings.

The bullpen shuffle continues as lefty Philip Abner was optioned to Reno following yesterday's game. Abner threw 34 pitches in his last outing, and with the starting rotation struggling to go deep into games, the bullpen has been under heavy strain. It makes sense for the D-backs to keep cycling through arms that have options—basically this slot and Juan Morillo. But Morillo, who boasts a 1.84 ERA—the lowest of any D-backs pitcher this season—isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

As the Diamondbacks look to turn the page in Chicago, these moves aim to stabilize both the lineup and the pitching staff. Moreno's bat and defensive presence are a boost, while Garcia offers another left-handed option out of the 'pen. The key now is execution—and staying healthy.
