The NFL Draft clock is ticking down, and the Arizona Cardinals are at the center of the action. With just five days to go, General Manager Monti Ossenfort is actively working the phones, and a major trade could be brewing.

Sources indicate the Cardinals have opened preliminary talks with the Kansas City Chiefs, who hold the 9th overall pick. The reigning Super Bowl champions are reportedly eyeing a move up to the Cardinals' coveted 3rd spot, likely targeting an elite pass rusher like Texas Tech's David Bailey or Ohio State's Arvell Reese. According to the classic NFL Trade Value Chart, moving from 9 to 3 represents a significant jump, with the 3rd pick valued at roughly 2200 points compared to 1350 for the 9th.

Any deal would almost certainly need to include the Chiefs' 29th overall pick, acquired in the offseason trade that sent All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. While Cardinals fans might hope for a massive haul, this year's draft is considered a buyer's market, and Arizona has been vocal about its desire to trade down. This could temper the expected return.

Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort played it coy when asked about trade interest, stating, "I think some of that will become more clear next week. I can’t speak with what’s going on in other rooms." Meanwhile, Chiefs GM Brett Veach hinted at an eventful night, telling media, "I think the fans will be in for a treat next Thursday... there will probably be a lot of trades."

The Cardinals may also aim to secure the Chiefs' 74th overall pick (a third-rounder), but that might be the ceiling for compensation. There's also the possibility Ossenfort is leveraging interest from other teams, like the Dallas Cowboys at picks 12 and 20, to drive up the price. The widespread belief is that this draft class has only 14-16 true first-round talents, making top-five picks exceptionally valuable.

Sitting at number three, the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a powerful and unique position. They hold the keys to a draft-night blockbuster that could reshape their roster for years to come.
