The Arizona Wildcats just landed a major playmaker for their future backfield, and he's bringing some serious Texas heat with him.
Three-star running back Wayne Shanks Jr. from Houston's Kinkaid School announced his commitment to Arizona on Friday, choosing the Wildcats over a crowded field of suitors that included Florida, Notre Dame, Miami, Kansas, Arkansas, and Tulane. It's a big get for a program looking to build momentum on the recruiting trail.
"The staff has been overly consistent and transparent with everything throughout this process, and they made it clear I was their guy," Shanks told Rivals. "They were genuine. When I was able to sit down with the family and talk about all the things that matter to me, Arizona checked all those boxes."
Shanks, who will join the Wildcats as part of the 2027 class, put up eye-popping numbers last season: nearly 1,800 rushing yards, averaging over seven yards per carry, and 24 touchdowns on the ground. But he's not just a between-the-tackles bruiser—he added another 26 catches for 352 yards and six more scores as a receiver, showcasing the kind of versatility that modern offenses crave.
Running backs coach Lyle Moevao has been the driving force behind Arizona's pursuit, and his quarterback background seems to have resonated with the explosive back. "Coach Moevao is a guy who played QB and knows the game really well," Shanks explained. "The players praise him and his understanding of the game and how to teach it. They gave me an opportunity to spend time with the players and allowed me to get an honest opinion on the program as a whole without the staff."
For Shanks, the decision wasn't made overnight—but once it came, it felt inevitable. "I've honestly known for a little while, but God had his way of speaking to me and sending me signs," he said. "After much prayer, he made it clear that this was the place for me. The process was very hard getting to the moment of when I knew I wanted to be a Wildcat, but making the decision was easy because I knew I didn't want to be anywhere else."
It's that kind of conviction that has Arizona fans excited about what's to come. And with a family atmosphere that Shanks says sets Tucson apart, the Wildcats are building something special—one explosive back at a time.
