Arike Ogunbowale was eligible for the WNBA supermax salary but said it was a "no-brainer" to take a discount on her contract extension with Dallas.

When Arike Ogunbowale put pen to paper on a multi-year, seven-figure contract extension with the Dallas Wings this offseason, she made a move that might surprise some fans. Despite being eligible for the WNBA's full $1.4 million supermax salary in 2026, the star guard chose to take a pay cut—and she calls it a "no-brainer."

Entering her eighth season, all with Dallas, Ogunbowale understands that building a championship team often requires personal sacrifice. By leaving money on the table, she gave the Wings crucial financial flexibility under the salary cap to bring in reinforcements. That decision paid off quickly, allowing Dallas to sign free agent forwards Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard—both expected to join Ogunbowale, Paige Bueckers, and No. 1 draft pick Azzi Fudd in the starting lineup.

Speaking after preseason practice on Tuesday, Ogunbowale explained her mindset. "God has blessed me with a good amount of money outside the court that I knew that in order to win here, you have to take less," she said. "All the greats have done it—all the great players. Vegas wouldn't be where they are if people didn't take less. New York has had to do the same, and we haven't even touched that."

She pointed to her experience playing with Smith at Unrivaled and her college chemistry with Shepard as reasons the decision was easy. "It was definitely worth it," Ogunbowale added. "I'm excited for what we can do here and glad everybody's getting paid."

In a league where top talent often commands top dollar, Ogunbowale's team-first approach is a reminder that sometimes the biggest wins happen off the court—and that a little sacrifice can go a long way toward building a contender.
