Which way, Pirates fans?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have stormed out to a 23-20 start, sitting just 1.5 games back from a Wild Card spot. For a team that has finished dead last in the NL Central for two consecutive seasons, this feels like a breath of fresh air for Buccos fans. But the big question remains: are these Pirates legitimate playoff contenders, or are they simply pretenders destined to fade?

Let's start with what's working—and that's the pitching rotation. Headlined by the electric Paul Skenes, who has been nothing short of dominant since his rocky Opening Day, this staff has real firepower. Mitch Keller and Braxton Ashcraft have stepped up as reliable frontline arms, giving Pittsburgh a formidable trio every series.

There's even more reason for optimism on the horizon. Jared Jones is making good progress in his Minor League rehab starts after elbow surgery, and keep an eye on Bubba Chandler, who has flashed early-season promise. If these arms stay healthy, this rotation could be a nightmare for opponents all year long.

The real question mark, however, is the offense. So far, the Pirates rank sixth in the majors in team OPS—a solid mark. Brandon Lowe has been a revelation in his first season with the club, leading the team with 10 home runs. Oneil Cruz is enjoying a breakout campaign, though longtime fans know his consistency can waver. Bryan Reynolds has room to improve his average and slugging, while top prospect Konnor Griffin is expected to get better as the season unfolds.

But my biggest concern isn't even the Pirates themselves—it's the division they call home. The NL Central is the only division in baseball where every single team sits above .500. There's no easy out, and that makes every series a grind. Can the Pirates truly keep pace with the likes of the Chicago Cubs down the stretch?

At this point, I'm not convinced Pittsburgh has the consistency to lock down a Wild Card spot, let alone challenge for the division. That said, the potential is real. The Pirates look like pretenders right now—but they have all the tools to flip that script and become the surprise contenders of 2025.
