Are the Badgers competitive enough in NIL?

Wisconsin wasn’t in the top half of NIL spending last year.

When it comes to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) spending, the Wisconsin Badgers have been a team of quiet resilience—but are they keeping pace with the Big Ten's biggest spenders?

Last season, the Badgers didn't crack the top half of NIL budgets in the conference, and head coach Greg Gard expects a similar reality for the 2026-27 campaign. That might raise eyebrows, especially given the program's consistent success on the court in recent years. But for Gard, the story isn't about what they lack—it's about how they make the most of what they have.

"You never have enough resources," Gard said candidly. "It's like, hey, would you like to get paid more in your job? Do you have the resources you want to travel everywhere to cover us? No. But we've been able to stay competitive. Our resources have gone up. I want to make sure that's clear."

Gard pushed back on the idea that Wisconsin is operating on a shoestring budget. "The stigma out there is, 'Well, Wisconsin has no resources.' No, we do. But guess what? The market has also climbed, and the competition hasn't stopped adding to their resources. We haven't stopped adding to ours, either. We've had very generous people."

With a significant athletic department investment in football this offseason, some have wondered if basketball is being left behind. Gard insists that's not the case, but he's realistic about the landscape. The rising tide of NIL spending across the country has made every dollar count—and every roster spot a negotiation.

That's where Gard's staff earns its stripes. Rather than chasing high-priced transfers, the Badgers have taken a calculated approach to the portal, prioritizing fit over flash. "We've had some very thoughtful insight into how to navigate this world," Gard said. "My staff has done an unbelievable job. I've got the best staff in the country at navigating this—from GM Marc VandeWettering negotiating with agents, to Joe Krabbenhoft, Lance Randall, Greg Stiemsma, Brad Davidson, and Sharif Chambliss all sitting down and putting their minds together to create a team."

For Badgers fans, the message is clear: Wisconsin may not be throwing the biggest NIL numbers around, but they're playing a smarter game. And in a sport where chemistry and culture often win out, that might just be enough to keep the Badgers competitive in the ever-evolving college basketball landscape.
