Are Scotland suffering from a World Cup hangover?

After the highs of a run to the quarter-finals at the World Cup last year, Scotland are facing a major rebuild, writes Andy Burke.

After the exhilaration of last year's Rugby World Cup, where Scotland Women stormed to the quarter-finals with memorable victories over Wales and Fiji, the team is now facing a sobering reality check. This year's Women's Six Nations campaign has been a stark reminder that success at the highest level comes with a price—and sometimes, a hangover.

Under new head coach Sione Fukofuka, Scotland entered a period of transition, introducing fresh faces and rebuilding their squad. While an opening win in Cardiff offered hope, the subsequent 84-7 defeat to England and a surprising 41-14 loss to Italy revealed the true scale of the challenge.

"We're seeing an element of just what it takes to perform at a World Cup," Fukofuka explained. "Many players went straight back to club rugby without a proper reset. There's natural attrition in that cycle, and we knew a transition was coming—but perhaps not this steep. Still, it's given us a chance to expose younger players who will feature strongly in the next two to three years."

Injuries have compounded the struggle. Key playmaker Emma Orr, captain Rachel Malcolm, Rachel McLachlan, and Lana Skeldon have all been sidelined, while veteran Lisa Thomson is still recovering from Achilles surgery. The result? A squad brimming with potential but short on experience. For this weekend's clash with France, ten of the matchday 23 have ten caps or fewer, and the eight substitutes combined boast just 44 caps.

It's a tough road ahead, but every great team knows that rebuilding is part of the journey. For Scotland, this Six Nations isn't just about results—it's about laying the foundation for the next World Cup cycle. And for fans, there's nothing more exciting than watching new stars rise.
